Life Puzzle (Ankh)

by Mathew Rosenblatt Burning Man, 2019

Life Puzzle is a striking 15-foot-tall steel light sculpture in the form of an Ankh—the ancient Egyptian symbol of life. Originally created for Burning Man 2019 and later featured at the Toronto Light Festival, this illuminated artwork was envisioned and commissioned by Mathew Rosenblatt and meticulously fabricated by Liquid PXL.

More than just a visual spectacle, Life Puzzle is a meditation on the journey of life itself. Like a jigsaw puzzle, life is assembled piece by piece—sometimes clear, sometimes uncertain, but always unfolding toward a greater whole. This sculpture invites viewers to reflect on their personal journey, whether they feel far from where they began or still far from where they’re headed.

The glowing structure serves as both a symbol and an experience—merging ancient iconography with modern lighting technology to create a piece that is contemplative, inspiring, and visually captivating. As light pulses through the steel frame, it evokes the idea of growth, transformation, and the slow, beautiful process of becoming whole.

Looking ahead, Life Puzzle will evolve into an interactive, multimedia installation. Audiences will be invited to submit personal images or short video clips via a dedicated web portal. These contributions will be projected directly onto the sculpture using two high-powered projectors, transforming the surface of the Ankh into a living mosaic of shared human experience. Accompanied by an original soundscape, this audiovisual layer will breathe new life into the work—making each installation unique, participatory, and emotionally resonant.

____________________________

Mathew Rosenblatt drew inspiration for Life Puzzle from the introspective journey we all undertake as human beings—how we slowly piece together meaning, identity, and purpose over time. The Ankh, a symbol traditionally associated with eternal life and spiritual growth, became the perfect foundation for expressing this idea. For Mathew, life is not something that arrives fully formed—it’s a puzzle we assemble through experience, challenge, and discovery. The sculpture reflects this belief, both in its layered design and in the way it invites viewers to contemplate their own evolving path. In creating Life Puzzle, Mathew sought to offer a moment of pause—a glowing reminder that every piece of our story matters, even if the full picture has yet to come into focus.
